The Monaco Government strengthens the support to MedFund within UNOC3.

The 2015 UN Ocean Conference is coming to an end and we are looking forward to high expectations in the Blue Transition. The Monaco's Government marks its commitment to support the Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) through the MedFund, an environmental trust fund, launched in 2015, entirely addressed to the cause, by the will of a joint initiative with France and Tunisia, with the support of Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. This innovative tool is based on multi-stakeholder governance involving institutional, philanthropic and private financial partners.

On the 11th June 2025, the Sovereign Prince of Monaco witnessed the signing of this pioneering partnership at the service of the Mediterranean Sea, while renewing the support to Med MPAs up to 1.5 million euros to reinforce the MedFund action plan for marine preservation, with the aim to encourage new partners to join the initiative to reach the target of 35 million euros by 2030.

« In 2024, we reached a key milestone: 20 marine protected areas supported in nine Countries: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Lebanon, Turkey, Greece, Albania, Montenegro and Croatia. The goal set in our 2020-2025 strategy is achieved! Today, driven by this collective dynamic, we are resolutely setting our sights on 2030 ».

Romain Renoux, Executive Director of MedFund

Throughout its existence, the MedFund has consolidated its role and expanded its scope of action by covering more than 9,500 km2 of marine and coastal protected areas, including a 800-km2 strong protection area (equal to more than half of the high-protection MPAs in the Mediterranean Sea). In total, 6.3 million euros have already been committed thanks to about fifteen donors.

The MedFund, based on cross-border cooperation, public and private co-management and science-based decision making, represents an essential aid to manage effectively MPAs located in the Southern and Eastern side of the Mediterranean Basin, where funding is too often jeopardised. Fostering climate mitigation and biodiversity protection are core targets, to comply with the 30x30 by 20230 international goal. This initiative addresses all of us asking to take action. The future of our common heritage is at stake today. ***
