Monaco Energy Boat Challenge 2026 in full swing to push Sustainable Marine Tech.

The teams set sail, the wind is favourable and Monaco is already in sight on the horizon.

The 13th edition of the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge - MEBC - is in full swing at the Yacht Club de Monaco, running from July the 8th to July the 11th, 2026. A four-day unique event which brings together over 1,000 students, engineers, and industry professionals from twenty-one countries to test real-world, sustainable maritime propulsion technologies.

This premier event serves as a floating laboratory, putting zero-emission propulsion systems — including hydrogen, electric, and methanol technologies — to the test in real-world conditions.

The event continues to attract those who share the same ambition: to accelerate the Maritime Sector’s Energy Transition. Organised under the umbrella of the ‘Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting’ initiative, and supported by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, the challenge serves as an open-air pioneering sport challenge in the waters of Port Hercules. Moreover, it bridges the gap between next-generation talent and established market leaders, bringing together major players in the nautical industry, including: Safe Harbor, Oceanco, Ferretti Group, Azimut / Benetti Group, and Lürseen.

Next to the competition, the MEBC Village (open free of charge from 10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m., from Thursday the 9th to Saturday the 11th July) allows all participants to unveil to the public their projects and technologies during a busy programme that combines on-water contests, conferences, demos, and activities accessible to all. Thus, visitors can get up-close looks at cutting-edge prototypes, learn about zero-emission devices, and interact with some of the brightest minds in naval engineering.

The 2026 Monaco Energy Boat Challenge highlights a major leap forward in Sustainable Yachting, focusing intensely on both Green Energy and AI Marine Design.

Key classes defining this year's event include:

  • Energy Class: Student-designed catamarans are put through their paces in speed records, slaloms, and endurance tests. This class encourages teams to push the limits of green energy propulsion using hydrogen fuel cells, hybrid setups, or electric motors.

  • AI Class: With fully autonomous vessels stretching up to 12 meters, this category challenges students to use advanced sensor systems and onboard artificial intelligence to solve real-world maritime navigation and energy optimisation problems.

  • SeaLab Class: Acting as true floating laboratories, these experimental prototypes explore next-generation energy architectures and emerging technologies like methanol fuel cells.

  • Open Sea Xperience: A showcase of zero-emission vessels available on the market, allowing industry professionals to test and sea-trial innovative, lower-emission marine transport solutions.

Last but not least, the Corporate Mentoring Programme and the Job Forum will allow established shipyards and manufacturers to scout fresh talent and explore commercial partnerships. This year's edition welcomes an American delegation from four renowned institutions, notably: Colombia University (New York), George Washington University, Howard University (Washington DC), and Florida International University.

The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation Sustainable Yachting Technology Award returns for the 2026 edition of the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge, with a €25,000 grant on the line. Four university teams, the University of Genoa, ENSAMHydrogadz, Politecnico di Torino, and Kumaraguru College of Technology, are then preparing to present innovative, energy-efficient solutions for the maritime sector in order to achieve this useful acknowledgment on Thursday the 9th. May the best win!

Bernard d’Alessandri, Director and General Secretary at the Yacht Club de Monaco, outlined as the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge « has become a place where ideas circulate, experiences are shared and the next generation of engineers works alongside industry professionals to progress sustainable maritime technologies ». ***
