UNOC3: Polar Donors Roundtable boosted the philanthropic action towards Polar Regions.

Updated: Jun 20

Philanthropy is increasingly a primary way to encourage nature conservation, biodiversity safeguarding, climate mitigation and sustainable economic growth. The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation is strongly committed in developing effective actions to channel private investment into projects of high environmental value. On the 9th June 2025, the Prince's Foundation, in partnership with Albedo Foundation for the Cryosphere, Oceans5, Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation and Blue Nature Alliance, organised the Polar Donors Roundtable (PDR) at The Cryosphere Pavilion, within The Whale Expo Centre. This unique event, part of the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3), held in Nice from the 9th to the 13th June, aimed at gathering leading philanthropic institutions addressed to protect Polar Regions, both Arctic and Antarctic.

These geographical regions are especially vulnerable since they warm three times faster than global average. This rapid change in temperature requires ecosystems to adapt to climate change, which leads to abnormal ice melting, sea level rise and severe effects on biodiversity. Despite that, frozen lands are still underestimated in terms of philanthropic aid.

H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco, pointed out: « I am delighted that we can now take a key step forward together and launch this new initiative, which I am convinced will be a milestone (...) A platform created by and for donors, ready to commit resources and act now, being eager to do so in the most impactful way ».

The Polar Donors Roundtable wanted to call for an intertwined philanthropic engagement at the global scale, playing as a collaborative platform to support impactful action, scientific research and policy advocacy. This initiative marks a significant outcome in parallel with the near-future Decade of Action for Cryosphere Science (2025-2034), in view of the Fifth International Polar Year (2032-2033). Bridging the knowledge gap through international science cooperation is a crucial target to reinforce polar capacity to tackle climate transformation.

The Polar Donors Roundtable sought to develop key points through various backbones. The meeting supported interactions to exchange knowledge, lessons learned and possibile opportunities. At the same time, it gave voice to scientific experts via leading organisations operating in Polar Regions to raise awareness and visibility of the importance of ice ecosystems, thanks to the support of the philanthropic community and an ever wider audience. ***
