The day has come! The 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference UNOC3 has just taken its course, under the Presidency of the French Government and the Republic of Costa Rica. The central theme of this edition, which will run from the 9th to 13th June 2025, "Accelerate action and mobilise all stakeholders to conserve and use the ocean sustainably" stresses the need to build common legal, economic, scientific, philanthropic and social strategies to restoring life to oceans, and then restoring life to ourselves. More than 150 international delegations, about 50 heads of state and governmental representatives, counting 30,000 participants, are requested to offer concrete statements and solutions.
The One Ocean Science Congress - OOSC, held in Nice from the 3rd to the 6th June 2025, paved the foundations in scientific research with the support of more than 2,000 researchers to produce recommendations based on the latest advances in marine biology and oceanography in order to be integral part of UNOC3 final remarks.
The Centre Scientifique de Monaco (The Monaco Science Centre) - CSM is actively involved in the debate through more than thirty researchers in Marine Biology, Polar Biology, Blue Economy and Human Health.

Sylvie Tambutté, Scientific Director of CSM has recently pointed out: « Accelerating international action for the conservation and sustainable use of the ocean is now a major issue that relies on scientific knowledge to enable balanced and effective decisions ».
Several emerging contributions are planned through our research programs, mainly focusing on:
the resilience of tropical corals, the success of assisted reproduction protocols in the natural environment (e.g.: Red Coral of the Mediterranean);
the repopulation through the preservation of wild spaces (e.g.: Penguins in the Weddell Sea – Antarctic);
the ecosytem-based services provided by the seas and oceans to populations and the impacts of their deterioration, especially in terms of human health.
On the 11th June 2025, the Monaco Scientific Centre will organise a targeted technical conference within the UNOC3 with focus on sentinel marine species, which are key to ocean ecosystems. In particular, the meeting will develop four main pillars:
--> Role in signalling the tipping or collapse of ecosystems;
--> Assessments of the socio-economic impacts of ecosystem degradation;
--> Human health effects; benefits of conservation, protection efforts and restoration of marine ecosystems;
--> Human health effects, benefits of conservation, protection efforts and restoration of marine ecosystems;
--> Technological and methodological innovations for their long-term study and monitoring.
The event will confirm the leading role played by the CSM in contributing to the advancement of knowledge of the oceans, its sustainable management and the preservation of its precious resources. ***
