A unique international non-profit association, based in Brussels, gathers energy efficiency leaders, involving various European Energy Award Gold cities and communities as members. The European Energy Awards (EEA) aims at developing programmes, platforms and tools to be applied at international, national and local level. Thus, municipalities and regions are fully involved in the cause, together with global partners.
The Principality of Monaco has recently being acknowledged as a win-win EEA Gold member, being ranked 80.2% to pay tribute to the great commitment shown by the Principality’s Gouvernement Princier and civil society towards energy transition and climate action. Monaco was awarded on the 28th November 2024 during the official annual ceremony set in Bolzano, South Tyrol (Northern Italy).
The result achieved is remarkable and it places Monaco among the few countries to receive it, worldwide, reinforcing its mission to reduce its carbon footprint .

Monaco, in fact, is pursuing ambitious goals to lower greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 (compared with 1990), and then reach carbon neutrality by 2050, according to the National Energy Transition Pact. The whole Monegasque community is mobilised to act and promote eco-friendly behaviours. And the Mission for Energy Transition, held in 2016 within the Ministry of Public Works, Environment and Urban Development, is being fostering targeted initiatives, workshops and training courses to accelerate the process.
The EEA's approach, jointly developed with Germany, Austria, France, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg and Switzerland, is the result of a cross-cutting multilateral collaboration. Creating a network of mutual working on shared values is an added benefit to design a more sustainable future for the present and the next generations. ***

EPISODE 7: What does Urban Functional Biodiversity refer to?
How do you feel when you come into contact with the green spaces of your city? Maybe more relaxed, regenerated and energetic! it is not by chance. #Urban Functional #Biodiversity is about various natural #species and their specific functional traits (e.g., nitrogen fixation, pollination, water retention) that maintain #ecosystems and provide essential #services in heavily populated areas. Boosting #climate regulation, favouring flood #control, reducing #pollution, providing recreational spaces and improving human #wellbeing, resilience and health are some of the most significant #benefits they generate.
Being inspired by #Nature’s balance helps #architects, #designers and urban #planners to select vegetation able to optimises specific ecological functions, such as #water infiltration or biodiversity support. Integrating interconnected #green spaces (e.g.: parks, green roofs) and #blue spaces (ponds, wetlands) promotes #habitat connectivity and strengthens urban biodiversity. Moreover, engaging local residents and stakeholders in the planning and management of urban nature, encourages a shared vision of the development of densely inhabited areas, boosting mental and physical health.
Main Strategies for Enhancing Urban Functional Biodiversity are:
· Biodiversity-Sensitive Design]: that is integrating native, multi-functional plant species into urban design, including vertical gardens and green roofs.
· Ecological Restoration: that is actively restoring urban green and blue spaces to enhance habitat diversity and ecological function.
· Inclusive Governance: that is engaging local residents and stakeholders in the planning and management of urban nature.
