The Principality and the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Region set the stage for the Academy of the Sea.
Updated: Jan 14
Education and training play a fundamental role in building eco-responsibility and respect for the environment. The interregional synergy between the French Riviera and the Principality are laying the foundations for an important step in this direction. His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco and Renaud Muselier, President of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Region, Deputy President of the Regions of France, have recently met to debate on major issues aimed at implementing the relations between France, Monaco and the French Southern Region. The opportunity presented itself at the launch of the Act V of the Méditerranée du Futur (Mediterranean of the Future), a major Euro-Mediterranean meeting of territories and adaptation to climate change, held in Marseille on the 6th December 2022, within the Euro-Med programme, co-founded by the European Union.
At the heart of the initiative, the creation of a French-speaking platform devoted to the three priorities: law of the sea, geopolitics of the seas and oceans, as well as environmental and related issues. The President of the the Regional Council highlighted: « The Principality of Monaco confirms itself as one of the leading Mediterranean states in the maritime field. For more than a century, it has acquired major infrastructure, tools and institutions in this area of expertise. As a pilot region of ecological planning in France, committed to a 100% climate approach unique in Europe, I hope that the region will support this absolutely essential dynamic. I will therefore be present in Monaco next March, on the occasion of Monaco Ocean Week, to present all details of this regional commitment alongside the Principality ».
H.S.H, Prince Albert II of Monaco pointed out: « I consider the Academy of the Sea as to be fully in line with the theme of the 'Mediterranean of the future'. I can only be pleased to see that the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region has joined this project, the interest of which is to be appreciated in terms of the challenges that the Mediterranean, like all other seas and oceans, will have to face in the future ».
The kicking off of the Academy of the Sea certainly represents a great result and a starting point towards the creation of qualified training focused on environmental protection. We hope that the theme of eco-communication and scientific dissemination will be considered as central part in the training path, being the leitmotif of all environmental issues. ***
