Strong of a long tradition in the field of research & development, innovation and pioneering missions, the Principality of Monaco has constantly been able to innovate and invest in avant-garde structures allowing international researchers to advance in scientific, medical and economic knowledge. The Centre Scientifique de Monaco - CSM - embodies these Monegasque values, representing a center of excellence.
Established in 1960 by the will of Prince Rainier III, it evolved in a prior coastal ecosystem hub (1990s) with special focus on climate change impact on coral reefs, up to developing Environmental Economics (2010) as well as Marine and Polar Biology (2012).
Starting a strategic partnership with the World Health Organisation in 2016, CSM continues to develop key themes while projecting itself towards new challenges.
From the 26th to the 28th November 2025, the CSM Improvement Committee gathered some of the most influential experts from French institutes led by Professor Dominique Doumenc, emeritus professor at National Museum of Natural History of Paris, at the Oceanographic Museum to take stock of the last four years of activity and propose key recommendations for projects in development, in the presence of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco, Dr Jean-Jaques Risso, new President at CSM, Dr Sylvie Tambutté, new Scientific Director at CSM.

The Scientific Director of the Centre Scientifique de Monaco, pointed out:
« It is a particularly intense and stimulating moment to present our results as well as our
research perspectives and scientific policy for the coming years, before this committee
made of very high-level scientific experts.
In this crucial time for the future of all forms of Biodiversity, faced with multiple threats
which are intensifying, research on the living is more essential than ever.
Being able to rely on the independent, forward-looking and rigorous expertise of this Committee to guide our work and opening new avenues is a major asset ».
In particular, the CSM Improvement Committee debated on Marine Biology, Polar and Medical, of the Molecular Biology issues as well as on those of the Scientific Director and the General Secretariat.
The members of the Committee praised the scientific advances made by the CSM teams in partnership with national and international partners, together with the multidisciplinary efforts undertaken to strengthen scientific mediation and training through shared techniques and resources, making the links between Biodiversity and Human Health increasingly synergistic.
Emeritus Professor Dominique Doumenc, concluded: « (...) The Scientific Center of Monaco will play for the Principality of Monaco a major research tool capable of responding to the effects of current pressure planetary physical changes on ecosystem health status and that of living beings in a continuous loop, from the level of the molecule to the human ».***
