The World Environment Day was held in 1972 by the United Nations to encourage eco-awareness and environmentally friendly action worldwide.
This year's host Country, Saudi Arabia, propoed the slogan "Our Land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration" to tackle the global problem of the advancement of desert areas that is involving up to 40% of the Planet Earth surface corresponding to half of the world’s population, according to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. Thus, half of the global GDP (44 trillion dollars) is under threat in view of an increase in desertification which could hit more than three quarters of the world’s human communities by 2050.
Land restoration is therefore the main mission of the United Nations Decade for the Restoration of Ecosystems (2021-2030), calling for the protection of global ecosystems achieve the Sustainable Development goals. Not by chance, the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 16) of the United Nations Convention against Desertification (UNCCD) will be held in Riyadh, the Saudi capital, from the 2nd to the 13th December 2024, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. ***
