On December the 8th, 2025, the United Nations General Assembly debated in New York themes related to Oceans and the Law of the Sea, namely sustainable fisheries, the Agreement on conservation and the sustainable use of marine biological diversity from areas outside jurisdiction national (BBNJ Agreement) as well as the next United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC4).
On that occasion, the Principality of Monaco confirmed its commitment to the preservation and protection of marine ecosystems.
In her speech, H.E. Isabelle Pittoresque, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Monaco to the United Nations Organisation, underlined Monaco Government's commitment to the preservation and protection of marine ecosystems.

initiatives led by the Gouvernement Princier and other Monegasque partners throughout 2025, with the aim to respond to the environmental challenges facing the ocean.

The UN General Assembly depicted how oceans are tightly connected to Sustainability and Climate Action, as well as strategic global internet traffic which relies on undersea cables (for a total of 99%). Oceans are then both natural and digital assets, as reaffirmed by Annalena Baerbock, President of the General Assembly.
Moreover, more than half of the oceans’ surface lies in areas beyond national jurisdiction. The General Assembly has been playing a crucial role to provide a sustainable ocean and sea management through a coherent and shared regulatory framework. Not by chance, the UN Ocean Conference (UNOC3) held in Nice in June 2025, started working on a targeted Political Declaration, named "Our Ocean, Our Future: United for Urgent Action", addressed to accelerate the High Seas Treaty enter into force.
Marine protection, ocean sustainable use, and fight against plastic pollution, are UNOC pillars of UNOC milestones, confirmed by the BBNJ Treaty (High Seas Treaty) for international marine zones.
The Principality of Monaco maintains a prominent position proving to be a key player. The Blue Economy and Finance Forum - BEFF - set at the Grimaldi Forum gathered leading Heads of State and Government and unveiled of the Space4Ocean Alliance, an international action-driven coalition to combine space, marine and maritime actors to enhance ocean preservation, the presidency for both coming years of the Pelagos Agreement dedicated to the protection of marine mammals in the Mediterranean, as well as the adoption of new climate commitments under the Paris Agreement. ***
