Forests are one of the most precious terrestrial areas in terms of biodiversity, hosting more than 80% of fauna and flora, including insects whose role is essential for any ecosystem. Those concentrations of green plants represent about 30% of the Planet Earth's surface acting as natural filters to ensure clean water and clean air while preventing the worst effects of climate change. Thus, on the 21st March each year the United Nations proclaimed the International Day of Forests. The chance to reflect and to look more respectfully at the environment around us. In view to celebrate trees and their connections with all living beings, the Office National des Forêts - ONF (National Forests Office) is organizing, in partnership with the Principality of Monaco and the Municipality of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, a free animation on the theme: "Bonne santé et bien-être" (“Good health and well-being”). This partnership has been working since 1986 to be ready against every emergency but also to convey meaningful messages. On the 18th March 2023, anyone interested can book online an immersive path in contact with the French Riviera's forest.

Departing from Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, all participants can explorer both natural and cultural heritage, from the seaside coastline up to 225 metres where you can find some picturesque hilltop village (villages perchés), full of local traditions. The Mont-Gros will be the final destination where to enjoy an exceptional view over the Principality and the Mediterranean Sea. A unique one-hour-and-half walk animated by special ONF guides who will enhance the beauty of nature and the importance of preserving the coastal biodiversity from fires and any other human threat.
A series of activities on the themes of wild-food nutrition and forest health will engage visitors as well as sightseeing and insect houses discovery.

EPISODE 7: What does Urban Functional Biodiversity refer to?
How do you feel when you come into contact with the green spaces of your city? Maybe more relaxed, regenerated and energetic! it is not by chance. #Urban Functional #Biodiversity is about various natural #species and their specific functional traits (e.g., nitrogen fixation, pollination, water retention) that maintain #ecosystems and provide essential #services in heavily populated areas. Boosting #climate regulation, favouring flood #control, reducing #pollution, providing recreational spaces and improving human #wellbeing, resilience and health are some of the most significant #benefits they generate.
Being inspired by #Nature’s balance helps #architects, #designers and urban #planners to select vegetation able to optimises specific ecological functions, such as #water infiltration or biodiversity support. Integrating interconnected #green spaces (e.g.: parks, green roofs) and #blue spaces (ponds, wetlands) promotes #habitat connectivity and strengthens urban biodiversity. Moreover, engaging local residents and stakeholders in the planning and management of urban nature, encourages a shared vision of the development of densely inhabited areas, boosting mental and physical health.
Main Strategies for Enhancing Urban Functional Biodiversity are:
· Biodiversity-Sensitive Design]: that is integrating native, multi-functional plant species into urban design, including vertical gardens and green roofs.
· Ecological Restoration: that is actively restoring urban green and blue spaces to enhance habitat diversity and ecological function.
· Inclusive Governance: that is engaging local residents and stakeholders in the planning and management of urban nature.
