Transforming traditional transport into a new integrated approach has its roots in the past, when the need to send goods over long distances encouraged the use of pallets and containers. It was the beginning of intermodal transport which provides for the integrated use of multiple means of transport, including shared ones, to reach the preferred destination. The Principality of Monaco White Paper, signed by H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco in March 2017 places the theme of sustainable transport as a prior target to be achieved to fulfil the energy transition and finally the carbon dioxide neutrality by 2050.
Car and bike sharing, improving the efficiency of railway and public transport lines, a new comprehensive service of electric cars through Mobee by SMEG Monaco are all concrete initiatives already operating on the Monegasque territory that go in that direction. A new step has been added recently. Monapass App, free of charge both for Android and Apple iPhones, can be joined by filling in a personal account making it possible to create a unique digital pass to access several subscriptions, like MonacoBike and the Compagnie des Autobus de Monaco one, where to buy single or season tickets.
Through an all-in-one click each user can access to a series of public services, notably, buses, e-bikes, parkings etc...as well as booking theater, cinema, football matches. It is then acting as a true 'Swiss Army knife' as defined by Roland de Rechniewski, Operations Director of the Compagnie des Autobus de Monaco (CAM).
As part of the Extended Monaco programme to implement Monaco's Smart City, this user-friendly tool is addressed to a large audience made of citizens, residents, visitors and tourists in order to allow them to move around Monaco with more agility.
Frédéric Genta, Interministerial Delegate in charge of the Digital Transition in Monaco, pointed out: « Monapass allows you to use all means of transport with your smartphone. No need to think about cards, subscriptions or money, Monapass integrates everything automatically and easily. Monaco is one of the few cities to be equipped with this application. Through Monapass, Monaco Government is moving forward in a sequenced and strategic way in the pursuit of three priority objectives: the ecological transition and sustainable development, in order to contribute to the goal of reducing traffic flows by 20% by 2030. It provides then a better quality of life by facilitating access to shared mobility and reducing urban congestion, and thus the digital transition of the Principality that allows users to benefit from a modern, pleasant and efficient tool». Monapass has already become a crucial portfolio of information about traffic situation, frequency of rides, and the best route to take thanks to the inclusion of Citymapper within the device.
Monapass is then acting as the digital liaison of a virtuous combination of different green means of transport, including electric or hybrid, integral part of the intermodal transport with the aim to reduce costs and CO2 emissions compared to those normally generated by business-as-usual road transport. ***
