Economy and financial markets are increasingly debating on eco-responsibility. BNP Paribas and the Centre Scientifique de Monaco, in partnership with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, will organise a technical conference on the 9th November 2023 at the Yacht Club de Monaco entitled: "Natural Capital: Challenges and Solutions for a Sustainable Future". Entrepreneurs, economists, academic researchers and key figures focused on environmental and environmentally friendly financial issues will animate the morning round table held at the Yacht Club de Monaco. Speakers will focus on the best actions to maintain the Natural Capital involving philanthropic and inter-governmental institutions as well as start-ups engaged in the ecological transition. The meeting will also examine the approach of financial markets on the topic. A two-day workshop for professionals will follow at the Monaco Scientific Centre putting Blue Carbon on the spotlight. Geneva Macro Labs, Euro-Mediterranean Economists Association EMEA, Fundación MERI, Yacht Club de Monaco, Association des Investisseurs Responsables Monaco and Monaco in Finance Institute will support the rendezvous as well.

Natural Capital can be considered as the global stock of natural assets from which a set of essential ecosystem services and products derive to keep liveable conditions on Planet Earth and sustain human well-being. Overcoming the natural regeneration capacity has become constant, causing biodiversity loss while affecting local economies increasingly subject to extreme climate change events able to generate impactful social consequences and new world conflicts. The term Natural Capital is traditionally attributed to Ernst Friedrich Schumacher, German- British statistician and economist, who introduced it in his 1973 book ‘Small is Beautiful’. Since 1970’s, it has been therefore of great interest at governmental, business, social and academic level.

MONACŒCOART® will attend the event and report about it pointing out the highlights from the various roundtables.. Stay tuned. ***

EPISODE 7: What does Urban Functional Biodiversity refer to?
How do you feel when you come into contact with the green spaces of your city? Maybe more relaxed, regenerated and energetic! it is not by chance. #Urban Functional #Biodiversity is about various natural #species and their specific functional traits (e.g., nitrogen fixation, pollination, water retention) that maintain #ecosystems and provide essential #services in heavily populated areas. Boosting #climate regulation, favouring flood #control, reducing #pollution, providing recreational spaces and improving human #wellbeing, resilience and health are some of the most significant #benefits they generate.
Being inspired by #Nature’s balance helps #architects, #designers and urban #planners to select vegetation able to optimises specific ecological functions, such as #water infiltration or biodiversity support. Integrating interconnected #green spaces (e.g.: parks, green roofs) and #blue spaces (ponds, wetlands) promotes #habitat connectivity and strengthens urban biodiversity. Moreover, engaging local residents and stakeholders in the planning and management of urban nature, encourages a shared vision of the development of densely inhabited areas, boosting mental and physical health.
Main Strategies for Enhancing Urban Functional Biodiversity are:
· Biodiversity-Sensitive Design]: that is integrating native, multi-functional plant species into urban design, including vertical gardens and green roofs.
· Ecological Restoration: that is actively restoring urban green and blue spaces to enhance habitat diversity and ecological function.
· Inclusive Governance: that is engaging local residents and stakeholders in the planning and management of urban nature.
