The Mediterranean Basin represents a favourable habitat for the cetaceans, emblematic marine species which are essential for the preservation of marine ecosystems and climate mitigation. The Pelagos Agreement among France, Italy and the Principality of Monaco has been committed to protect marine mammals for twenty-five years, being the first cross-borer pact to focus on protecting living beings from human impacts through the creation of a targeted Marine Protected Area (MPA): the Pelagos Sanctuary. In addition to promoting operational actions on the territory, the Pelagos Secretariat is involved in an multimedia educational action addressed to new generations. In this context, the recent partnership with The Monaco Metaverse by DWorld VR projects Pelagos commitments into the future of technology.
The pioneering high-tech company has recently unveiled the first augmented-reality platform tracing Monaco's avatar in a brand new dimension where to interact with the whole world, do business and take advantage of the exclusive hospitality services of the Principality. From the 15th March 2024 on, it will be also a privileged stage where to plunge in an immersive, educational and playful experience to engage with all species of dolphins and whales that populate the north of the Mediterranean. Thanks to pioneering technologies, young users will soon embark on a virtual journey to explore marine biodiversity in deep waters off the coast of Nice, Monaco and Genoa. All this by simply linking to the Pelagos website.
The project will be officially presented within the 2024 edition of the Monaco Ocean Week, major summit on ocean conservation, held in Monaco from the 18th until the 22nd March 2024.

Viola Cattani, Deputy Executive Secretary of the Pelagos Agreement pointed out:
«The Pelagos Agreement is particularly attentive on communication and awareness-raising action. Dworld Metaverse ambitious Metaverse project fits perfectly with the target to raising awareness, particularly addressed to young generations, for the Sanctuary conservation and the protection of its inhabitants. This area, in fact, belongs to all and everyone can and must contribute to preserve it. But you have to know it in oder to protect it».
Manila Di Giovanni, CEO of Dworld, highlighted: « The Monaco Metaverse offers a unique opportunity to transcend geographical boundaries, create new opportunities for collaboration among various Monegasque entities, and engage the public in meaningful ways. Through this collaboration, we aspire to ignite a sense of stewardship for our oceans and inspire future generations to become advocates for marine conservation ».
The new synergy between the Pelagos Sanctuary and DWorld VR launches a challenge to new forms of multimedia education closely linked to the needs of the territory, to promote collective and intergenerational actions to promote Nature and Wildlife conservation. ***

EPISODE 7: What does Urban Functional Biodiversity refer to?
How do you feel when you come into contact with the green spaces of your city? Maybe more relaxed, regenerated and energetic! it is not by chance. #Urban Functional #Biodiversity is about various natural #species and their specific functional traits (e.g., nitrogen fixation, pollination, water retention) that maintain #ecosystems and provide essential #services in heavily populated areas. Boosting #climate regulation, favouring flood #control, reducing #pollution, providing recreational spaces and improving human #wellbeing, resilience and health are some of the most significant #benefits they generate.
Being inspired by #Nature’s balance helps #architects, #designers and urban #planners to select vegetation able to optimises specific ecological functions, such as #water infiltration or biodiversity support. Integrating interconnected #green spaces (e.g.: parks, green roofs) and #blue spaces (ponds, wetlands) promotes #habitat connectivity and strengthens urban biodiversity. Moreover, engaging local residents and stakeholders in the planning and management of urban nature, encourages a shared vision of the development of densely inhabited areas, boosting mental and physical health.
Main Strategies for Enhancing Urban Functional Biodiversity are:
· Biodiversity-Sensitive Design]: that is integrating native, multi-functional plant species into urban design, including vertical gardens and green roofs.
· Ecological Restoration: that is actively restoring urban green and blue spaces to enhance habitat diversity and ecological function.
· Inclusive Governance: that is engaging local residents and stakeholders in the planning and management of urban nature.
